It will be helpful to learn some Hungarian phrases before traveling to Hungary and parts of Eastern Europe.
Hungarian is a Uralic language spoken by about 13 million people around the world. The official language of Hungary, Hungarian also is spoken by smaller communities in the neighboring countries of Romania, Slovakia and Serbia. Hungarian is not related to any other major European language, and beginners will find the vocabulary and grammar significantly different from anything they have learned before.
Instructions
1. Learn the Hungarian alphabet. Hungarian is a phonetic language, which means that all words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. Listen to the correct pronunciation of the letters online, using websites such as Hungarotips to download an audio file. Pay particular attention to letters that look the same in Hungarian and English but have different sounds. For example, the letter "c" is pronounced "ts" in Hungarian, and "s" is always pronounced as "sh" in "ship." Note that the stress always falls on the first syllable of the word.
2. Identify the Hungarian phrases you want to learn. If you are planning a vacation to Hungary, concentrate on learning phrases that will be useful in tourist situations, such as booking a hotel room or ordering a meal in a restaurant. If you are planning to do business in Hungary, focus on learning phrases that will be valuable in a business environment. Use online resources such as the Hungarian phrases on the Omniglot and Linguata websites to find appropriate phrases.
3. Make flashcards with the Hungarian phrases you want to learn. Write the Hungarian phrase on one side of the flashcard and the English translation on the other. Carry the flashcards with you every day, and study them for a few minutes at a time while traveling on public transportation or waiting in lines. Dedicate at least half an hour each day to studying the phrases to make steady progress.
4. Enlist the help of a friend to test you on what you have learned. Ask your friend to hold up the flashcards one by one while you say the words aloud in Hungarian. Identify the phrases you are struggling to remember, and practice these more intensely.
