You can leave a mask plain or add glitter and feathers.
To make your own mask for a masquerade or costume party, start with a mask form. You can buy a plain mask at a Halloween or costume store or at some craft stores. You can also make your own mask using a piece of thick card stock. Punch holes in the corners of the mask and tie on a piece of elastic to keep it on your face, or glue a wooden dowel to the back side of the mask so you can hold it up to your face.
Peacock Feathers
Buy fake peacock feathers from a craft store. If you can't find peacock feathers, buy a variety of feathers in shades of blue and green. Cover the mask with glue. Starting near the eye holes, and glue on the smallest feathers first and move up to using larger feather as you get to the edge. Glue feathers all the way to the edge so that the ends of the feathers extend past the edge. If you're using both blue and green feathers, alternate shades but don't use a set pattern so it will look like they're real peacock feathers from far away.
Metallic Mask
A metallic mask will go with any color ensemble. Pick silver or gold and buy paint, sequins and either glitter or puffy paint all in the same shade. Paint the entire front of the mask and allow it to dry completely. Next, use either the puffy paint or glue in a bottle to draw swirls and designs on the mask. If you're using glue, sprinkle glitter on the glue and shake off the excess. Let the designs dry completely. Working on a small section at a time, draw a line of glue and attach sequins all the way around the outside edge of the mask.
Black Lace
A black lace mask is a romantic and sexy look that is most appropriate for a woman. Start with a white mask base. Buy a piece of black lace and some black lace fabric trim from a fabric store. Cover the mask with glue and lay the lace on top. Let it dry before trimming off the extra fabric so the lace doesn't move around while you're cutting it. Cut around the edge of the mask and cut out the eye holes. Draw a line of glue around the outside edge of the mask and attach the base of the trim around it. To give it extra flair, glue one large black feather and a single red rose to one side of the mask.
Animal Print
An animal-print mask stands out from the crowd. "Better Homes and Gardens" magazine suggests buying felt that is printed with an animal pattern, like tiger stripes. Glue the felt onto the mask form, then trim off the excess. Add some matching feathers, like orange and black for a tiger mask, and you're done. You can also opt to create the pattern by hand. Paint the mask with the base color, then paint on the print yourself. For instance, make a zebra mask by starting with a white mask and use black paint to make zebra stripes. You can also try using a standard animal print but change the colors, like painting brown and black cheetah spots onto a blue or purple mask form.
