Travel to faraway places in pretend play with safari costume accessories.
You can make a kid's safari hat for costumes and pretend play with a few common household items and less than an hour's time. The project is simple enough that a child can help out with the craft and decorate the hat with her favorite colors and animals.
Instructions
1. Cut out a circle in the middle of a paper plate. You can use a disposable plastic plate if you do not have a paper plate. Place the plate on top of the safari hat wearer's head to make sure it sits over the crown of his head.
2. Lay out a large piece of safari-themed fabric, place the plate on the fabric and fold the fabric over the plate. Cut off the excess fabric around the plate, leaving 1 inch all the way around. Cut out the inner circle of fabric, leaving 1 inch of excess fabric here as well.
3. Spread some clear or white craft glue onto the plate and fold the fabric over the plate and smooth it out to make sure none of the plate is visible. Apply extra glue on the fabric edges to secure them to the plate.
4. Use another piece of safari fabric to cover the outside of a paper or disposable plastic bowl. Cut out around the bowl. Spread glue on the bowl and smooth out the fabric on the bowl. Allow the plate and bowl to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.
5. Apply a generous layer of glue to the brim of the bowl and insert the dome of the bowl through the circle cut out in the plate. Press firmly to affix the brim of the bowl to the interior edges of the plate. Allow the hat to dry for 30 minutes.
6. Decorate the safari hat. Spread a layer of glue on the back of foam letters to spell out the wearer's name and apply the foam letters to the brim of the hat. Decorate the dome of the safari hat with foam animals by applying glue to the back of the animals and pressing them firmly onto the hat.
7. Use a hole punch to make two holes in the brim on opposite sides of each other. Tie one end a 16-inch-long piece of craft cord into a knot. You can use a shoelace if you do not have cord. Thread the cord through one of the holes in the hat so that the knot stays on top of the hat. Thread the cord through the other hole and tie a knot to keep the cord from slipping back through the hole. Tug on both sides gently to make sure the knots stay in place. Cut any excess cord above the knot.
