Never soak a mounted duck in water or chemicals to remove dust or dirt.
Mounting a duck is a potentially expensive venture that has a price dependent upon the size and intricacy of the mount. Over time, the mount will accumulate dirt, dust and, in some cases, soot from fireplaces. Manual cleaning of a duck mount is accomplished depending upon the condition of the body and feathers. Using the correct equipment and chemicals will ensure the preservatives used during mounting are not disturbed.
Instructions
1. Remove the bird from the wall, if it is hanging up.
2. Remove dust from the duck's feathers, legs and face with a feather duster. Carefully lift up the feathers with gloved hands if there is heavy dust buildup in between.
3. Wet a cotton swab with distilled water, and rub away dirt or grime not removed with the feather duster. Use the water with caution as this may remove some of the preservatives and paint used on the birds, leaving behind streaks and brittle feathers.
4. Wet a separate cotton swab with distilled water to clean the bird's eyes. Rub the water onto the eyes, and allow it to dry.
5. Wet a cotton swab with 70 percent ethanol to clean the difficult stains on painted areas. Use a light hand with the ethanol, and if any of the paint is removed through the process, stop immediately and take the duck to a professional taxidermist for a cleaning.
