How You Can Coordinate A Black & Silver Wedding

Broad silver ribbon adds shine to a classic white cake.

Designing your wedding with black and silver, a classic color combination with dozens of thematic possibilities, affords the opportunity to style a glamorous old Hollywood affair; a sleek, modern-and-urban event; or a classic formal evening. Accent with red, pink, white, gold or gray to expand your design and theme options. For instance, add red for spice, pink for romance or gold for an evening of opulence. Use stars, hearts, angels and diamonds to coordinate your theme and incorporate black and silver in multiple ways. From the invitations to the favors, using black and silver creates limitless design options.

Instructions

1. Create an overall design scheme or motif for your wedding using black and silver as your primary colors. Add other colors as accents to allow black and silver to remain the main focus.

2. Determine your budget and how to best execute your theme within its confines. You may find you need to alter or change your theme to an entirely different type that can be implemented at a lower cost.

3. Design your invitations through an online program, computer software or a stationery or wedding supply store. The invitation is the introduction to your theme for your guests and sets the tone for the ceremony and reception. Whether formal or funky, use patterns, textures and different types of papers to make a statement piece that entices guests. Use silver text on black stationery for a more subtle design or black text on silver stationery for edgy appeal.

4. Continue your black and silver theme in programs, place cards, favor labels and other paper items within the ceremony and reception. Printed or monogrammed napkins, place mats and matchbooks that match the invitations create unity within your theme.

5. Echo the elements of your invitation in table runners, china patterns, cloth napkins and main d cor in the reception space. Patterned candles, candle holders and vases against pops of a solid accent color create interesting and eye-catching contrast without overpowering other elements of the d cor.

6. Use square or round mirrors to make a strong base for a collection of tea lights and votives. Choose black and silver candle holders, or place candles directly on the mirrored tile. Place a black or silver vase in the center of the mirror, and fill the vase with feather plumes in the opposite color. Add ribbons draping out of the vase in black, silver and accent colors, and surround the vase with tea lights in candle holders.

7. Design centerpieces that integrate accent colors, black, silver and crystal for maximum effect. Ting ting bunches, battery-operated twinkle lights, crystal sprays, artificial flowers, fresh flowers, and pearl and diamond scatters fill out your centerpieces with sparkle to complement a glamorous theme, while edgy brides may opt for more abstract appeal in clusters of candles arranged in various bowls and candelabra.

8. Decorate the cake with silver and touches of black, which in large amounts can make the icing bitter. Use accent colors and edible glitter or airbrushed silver food coloring for extra shine.

9. Finish your theme with favors that tie everything together. From black coffee and blackberry jam to silver Jordan almonds, edible favors are popular and simple. For more complex parting gifts, consider silver photo frames or black barware.
