How You Can Clean A Shoji Screen

Shoji screens let the lights shine through while affording privacy.

Shoji screens come in a variety of styles and woods. Though the term "shoji" refers to the rice paper these screens were traditionally made from, contemporary screens also come in silk, plastic or other materials. Shoji screens allow light through while providing privacy. In Japan the shoji screens often screen the home from the outside in addition to acting as interior walls. Shoji screens come as pocket doors, closet doors, desk screens, room dividers and portable floor screens. Floor screens usually have three to six panels. The rice paper panels, called "lights" come framed with wood. Shoji screens require little maintenance other than dusting.

Instructions

1. Use a soft duster (ostrich feather, lamb's wool, or synthetic) on the shoji screens. The main thing is to select a soft, well-padded duster and use it in light strokes to avoid the risk of denting or tearing the panels. Flick the duster quickly at all the wooden frame edges for the most efficient dust removal.

2. Use a clean, soft cloth to gently rub the frames if there's a build-up of dust that didn't come off with the duster. Avoid sprays, water and oily or chemical products as these may stain the panels or the wood.

Wipe down plastic or resin panels with a damp soft cloth. The Eplastics website recommends using a mild detergent. Many chemical products can damage these materials, and textured cleaning tools such as scrub sponges and even terry cloth (wash cloths) can scratch the surface.

3. Brush any difficult to clean areas with a soft brush, such as an unused paintbrush or toothbrush. For example, if the shoji screen gets grease residue from the kitchen. Stiff bristles can mar the wood finish or dent the paper or silk panels, so select the softest brush. Gently brush the lenses to remove dust build-up.

4. Clean a neglected shoji screen with a vacuum cleaner upholstery attachment. Use slow, gentle brushing strokes to vacuum off caked on dust.

5. Dust the shoji screens lightly at least once a week for trouble-free maintenance.
