How You Can Color Flowers With Dye

Color flowers for boutonnieres or tabletop arrangements with kitchen dye.

If you have armfuls of white flowers but prefer some variation in your arrangement, use dye to get multiple colors. Tuberous-stemmed flowers, like carnations, color quickly but most flowers will be suitable for this project. Create a rainbow of colorful flowers by placing small groups of them in different dyes, and even more vibrant hues by allowing the flowers to soak in the dyes longer. Refresh already-colored flowers by dipping them in dye for a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Fill a glass or ceramic vase two-thirds-full with cool water.

2. Drop in three to six drops of food coloring in the water.

3. Stir the water with a long plastic spoon. Set the vase to the side.

4. Clip the ends of the flowers with a sharp knife or scissors. Cut flowers at an angle while holding the ends under the water. You only need to trim an inch or two from the stem but cut them according to your needs for height or use.

5. Place the stems in the water and set them in a cool area for several hours. Allow the flowers to soak overnight for even deeper colors.

6. Remove the flowers from the food coloring/water mixture and place them in plain water.
