Bird On String Craft

Use real birds as inspiration for your hanging bird crafts.

While birds often perch or nest, the beautiful creatures are most iconic when they take to the skies. When creating a bird craft, you can give your project flight by hanging it with a string. Use a variety of materials to make the birds' wings and bodies, then hang your creation anywhere you choose, such as an overhanging ceiling decoration or as an ornament on a tree.

Cardboard Bird

Use the cardboard tube of an empty toilet paper roll to create this flying bird on a string. Measure the cardboard tube and cut out a piece of paper to wrap around it. Color this shape to resemble a bird's body, including its tummy and feet. On another piece of paper, draw the bird's extended wings, and also its head. Cut out the shapes and glue them in place on the cardboard, with the body wrapped around the tube, the head on top and the wings extending from the sides. Poke a hole in the center of the back of the tube and thread a string through it. Hang the bird from the ceiling to make it appear that it's soaring overhead.

Caged Bird

Create your own decorative bird cage to hang as an accent in any room. Begin by blowing up a latex balloon to the size you wish the cage to be. Cut a few feet of yarn, using any color you choose. Dip the yarn in glue, and allow any excess liquid to drip off. Wrap the yarn around the balloon in a random pattern to create the cage. Let the glue dry completely, then pop the balloon and remove it to reveal the round cage. Hang a paper bird inside from the top of the cage, and attach another string on the outer top of the cage for hanging.

Paper Bird

Draw the profile of the bird's body, head and beak on a piece of sturdy paper, such as poster board. Cut out the shape, and make two vertical slits in the paper --- one where the wings will go and another toward the back for the tail. Do not cut these slits through the perimeter of the paper. Color in the bird's body with markers or crayons. Select two separate pieces of paper in colors that will match your bird. Fold them like an accordion. Place the folded papers through the slits and open the material to showcase the bird's wing and tail feathers. Poke a hole on top of the bird's body and thread a string to hang the creation anywhere you choose.

Pine Cone Bird

Use the natural art supply of a pine cone to create a one-of-a-kind bird craft. Select a pine cone in a shape that you think will make a nice bird body. Create the bird's face using any materials you choose, such as felt circles for the eyes and orange pipe cleaner for its opened beak. Glue the features on the pine cone. Attach a small, colorful feather on either side of the pine cone to create the wings and glue three or four smaller feathers in the back of the pine cone to represent the bird's tail feathers. Tie a string around the top of the pine cone to hang the bird craft.
