Suggestions For Kids' Photo Props

Dress-up items can make for creative kids' photos.

Photo props can add an extra dimension to photographs of children by enhancing the setting and showing off their personalities. They also serve as a distraction for kids, giving them something to focus on other than the camera. Before a session, talk to the parents to find out about the child's interests, likes, and the crucial aspects of the child's personality.

Animals

For many children, animals are a source of fascination and excitement. To translate these emotions into great photographs, bring animals to photo shoots with children. If the kids are timid, stay safe with family pets. For more adventurous children, you might bring in new animals or baby animals, like chicks or bunnies. The animals will keep the child distracted and you will be able to capture the child's delight, which can result in touching photos.

Dress-Up Items

Dress-up items can give outgoing children a chance to show off their personalities, allowing them to be over-the-top with clothing. For girls, feather boas, oversized sunglasses, heels and tutus make for adorable photo props. For boys, look for cowboy hats, boots, tool belts, and hard hats. You can also bring along fairy wings, crowns or jewelry. The kids will be excited to try on the clothes and you may be able to capture unexpected reactions or facial expressions.

Containers and Objects

Use creative containers and objects for photos to add a touch of whimsy to photos of children. For very small children and infants, fill buckets and baskets with blankets and set the child inside. You might also lay a baby on a stack of books, towels or a pile of pillows. Other items to consider include vintage crates, antique strollers or bassinets. For larger children, look for items like antique furniture or child-sized benches.

Hats and Headbands

When you want to add a detail that will create sweet photographs, use hats and headbands. A big flower headband on an otherwise unclothed infant creates a sweet, natural look for the photo; the same goes for a winter hat. For older children, you can use cowboy hats, dramatic hats, or funky hats. To add extra meaning, look for items with a story, like a hat made by a grandmother or godparent.
