Epoxy resin is often used in conjunction with fiberglass.
Epoxy resin is used with many materials and objects such as boats, decorative objects and more. Epoxy resin is also often used to create a hard surface over fiberglass sheets. With age and use, gaps can appear in the surface of the epoxy resin. Filling these gaps is a simple process that will help restore the object to its original usefulness. The best way to fill the gaps is with additional epoxy resin injected into the cracks and gaps. This project will take between one and two days depending on the number of gaps.
Instructions
1. Clean the cracked areas with a solvent cleaner and work rags to remove all dirt and wax from the surface of the resin. Allow the area to dry before starting the repair.
2. Open cracks gaps with a V shaped scraper. This removes all loose resin pieces and any dirt or other contaminates that fell into the crack. Pull the scraper along the center of the crack to open it and remove dirt.
3. Sand the inside of the crack to roughen the surface of the resin and improve adhesion with the new epoxy filler. Brush out the inside of the cracks with a brush to remove loose particles.
4. Mix a two part epoxy filler with a putty knife or paint stirrer. Fill a caulk gun with the epoxy resin.
5. Fill the cracks with the resin by squirting the new resin inside the cracks with the caulk gun. Overfill the cracks slightly.
6. Use a putty knife to feather out the epoxy filler over the exterior resin. Allow the filler to dry for 24 hours.
7. Sand the filler with a rough grit sandpaper so that it is flush with the original resin. Wet sand the filler with a finer grit paper to smooth the surface of the filler and resin.
8. Paint the surface of the repair with a resin gel coat. Use a paintbrush to apply the coat. Allow the gel coat to dry for 24 hours before using the epoxy resin for anything.
