How To Look After An Ostrich Skin Boot

Properly care for your ostrich skin boots.

Ostrich skin is considered an exotic leather product. Many types of clothing and accessories, such as handbags, belts and even boots use ostrich skin. The care of ostrich skin is a little different than regular leather, but you can easily maintain your ostrich skin once you know the proper method. Ostrich skin will last for many years, so take a little extra time to care for your boots. The maintenance will be worth it when everyone compliments you on your exotic boots.

Instructions

1. Brush your boots regularly. Do this to remove any dirt or dust after wearing them. Gently brush them, and the dirt should easily come off.

2. Remove stains. You can use a pencil eraser for many scuffs and marks. Just rub it against the marks until they disappear. For oil stains, apply a little talcum powder to the spot. Let the powder remain on the skin for 10 minutes. Then brush the spot gently.

3. Wipe the ostrich leather with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt. Do not use soap. Gently wipe over the dirty areas.

4. Apply a conditioner to your ostrich skin boot. You can use one made for alligator skin if you can't find ostrich conditioner. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when applying the conditioner. The conditioner will keep the boots moist and supple. You may need to apply several coats of conditioner.

5. Buff the boots. After the conditioner has dried, use a clean cloth and gently rub all over the boots to polish.

6. Store boots properly. Place a clean cloth around them. Store them in the closet away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the color to fade.
