Hollywood Party Planning

Hollywood is a great party theme.

Hollywood is a great party theme, whether you are hosting an Academy Award party, birthday party or costume party. Because of the many possibilities for food, costumes and activities, Hollywood parties are easy, fun and memorable.

Create the Space

Take time to carefully plan the room or venue. For a Hollywood party, atmosphere is everything. A red carpet is essential; have one set up at the entrance or through the front door. Luminaries with real candles or flickering LED tea lights can add drama by lighting the way.

After the grand entrance is planned, work on the doorway into the room. A curtain made of metallic fringe, feathers or beads adds flair to the doorway and guests can make an entrance as they come into the room. Find fake palm trees to flank each side of the doorway and add a spotlight if you wish.

Once the entrances are set, work on the rest of the space. Keep lighting low to add ambiance and the feeling of old Hollywood. If you need to, borrow a few table or floor lamps to give a glowing effect. Play old black and white movies (without sound) as guests arrive.

Create a snack table by draping a red velvet tablecloth over a large dining room table. Add a large candelabra in the center and spread small gold foil or paper stars over the table to add sparkle. Find plastic Oscar statuettes and place them around the candelabra. Add red and white filled popcorn boxes and lots of large candy boxes so guests can help themselves.

Drape red or dark fabric over bookcases, chairs, and sofas to clean up the edges of the room--a sleek room is vital to the success of the theme. Place movie cases around the room for decorations, and be sure to include a few palm trees and a re-creation of the Hollywood sign.

Other decorative items include cardboard stand-ups of famous movie stars, dangling gold stars, walk of fame stars and director's chairs.

Food and Drink

Set up a bar and have plenty of martini glasses, liquor and garnishes on hand. An ice bucket is an absolute must for adding glamor to a Hollywood party, as are cloth cocktail napkins. There are several food options to consider, like a chic Hollywood-style appetizer buffet that includes jumbo shrimp cocktail, sushi and chopsticks, caviar, foie gras and chocolate truffles. Or set up a snack-style buffet with theater snacks such as nachos, soft pretzels and hot dogs. You could also ask guests to bring dishes that symbolize their favorite Hollywood movies; award a prize for the most creative dish.

Party Games

If the Hollywood party coincides with the Academy Awards, make ballots for each guest to make predictions; award the person with the most correct wins a faux Academy Award. If the party is not held for the Oscars, purchase a movie-themed DVD board game. Ask guests to wear costumes; consider asking guests to dress up like their favorite stars. Have guests vote on the best costumes and award prizes. Great game prizes include faux Oscars, large candy boxes, novelty sunglasses, feather boas and candy cigarettes.
