Saloon Girl Costume Ideas

The Old West

Women were scarce in the Old West. Saloon owners hoping to take advantage of female-deprived customers, often hired ladies to entertain them. The saloon girls would sing, dance and talk with customers to get them to stick around and spend their hard-earned wages. Attire for saloon girls was typically frilly and colorful. The ensemble works well for Halloween parties.

Hstorical Costume

Saloon girl attire was often brightly colored and ruffled. Under the bell-shaped skirts they wore colorful petticoats and high-heeled boots adorned with tassels. Arms and shoulders were usually bare and bodices were cut low.

Fancy Halloween Costume

To make a saloon girl Halloween costume you will need a corset over a lace or satin gown. Buy a corset online or in a lingerie shop. Look through thrift stores for the dress. An old mid-calf or longer prom gown with a ruffled hem would work. Dye a white petticoat in a contrasting color and wear underneath your dress. Or, use a pattern for a petticoat and make one in any color and fabric that you like. Red silk was popular. Add a pair of thigh-high fishnet stocking with a black or red garter and a pair of tall lace-up boots.

Simple Halloween Costume

For as less expensive version of the costume, decorate a brightly colored tank top by adding lace and ruffles around the sleeves and neck line. Wear with a couple of contrasting ruffled peasant skirts from a thrift store. Pin one skirt up a little higher in the front. Wear with boots and fishnet stockings.

Hair and Makeup.

The saloon girls were called "painted ladies" for a reason. They dared to wear makeup and dye their hair, something a farmer's wife would never do. So wear bright ,heavy makeup such as a pale base, red lipstick and blush and dark eye shadow. Hair should be curly and up. A few tresses can hang loose around the face. Try a wig if your own hair is not the right length and color.. Small lace hats or feathers in the hair top your look.

Accessories

Carry a fancy fan for flirting and fainting. Carry a bottle to refill, or pretend to refill, drinks. Protect yourself form the rowdy cowboys with a small toy pistol tucked into your garter. A bit of black velvet ribbon around the neck makes an attractive necklace.A feather boa adds pizazz,
