Handheld Fan Crafts

Hand-held fans make great crafts to entertain children on overly hot summer days when playing outside is not an option. This craft also is entertainment for adults and senior adults. In addition to providing entertainment, the finished project will provide a fan-produced breeze to cool down the fan's maker. You can make hand-held fans any time of the year and for any purpose and decorate them accordingly.

Simple Paper Fold

Taking a sheet of paper and folding it in an accordion pattern makes the simple paper fold fan. The paper may be plain white, a solid color or patterned or textured. A pattern of decorative die cuts can be punched into the paper before it is folded into the accordion fan shape. Fasten one end of the accordion-folded sheet of paper by using tape, string or staples. If folded with dexterity, this type of hand-held fan craft will look incredibly professional and delicate. Adorn it with ribbon to add charm.

Figure Fans

Cardboard and thick construction papers work well for hand-held fan crafts. Cut the cardboard into the shape of an animal's face or a person and decorate it with layers of construction paper. If making a tiger head-shaped fan, first cover the shape in a solid layer of orange construction paper. Layer black pieces on for the strips, and add gray pieces for the tiger's nose, white for whiskers and green for eyes. After the figure is completed, attach a tongue depressor or craft stick as the fan handle.

Simple Stick Fans

A simpler variation of the figure fan is a shape cut into cardboard or cardstock that is painted and decorated, then attached to a handle. Cardboard and cardstock cut into the shape of a butterfly and decorated with ribbon and buttons is an example of this type of fan. An even simpler idea is to attach coloring pages on cardstock paper, color them and attach to a handle.

Paper Banner Fans

Paper banner fans are hand held fan crafts made from pieces of paper, cardstock, or cardboard cut into elbow macaroni shapes. The pieces are colored, decorated, and then attached to three or more Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors positioned so that their ends touch but they are spread out to keep the fan from bowing in the middle.

Stick Fan

Those who are especially crafty and careful may want to attempt the hand held fan craft of creating a fan solely of Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors. This fan craft will require strong wood glue and a steady hand. This craft will be heavier than the other hand held fan crafts described above. This craft can be done by placing the sticks on top of one another and spreading them out slightly.
