Costumes For Any Western Theme Party

Costumes for a Western Theme Party

Anyone looking to throw a wild party can turn to the Wild West. Dozens of costume options, ranging from the comical to the come-hither, are at the ready for a Western themed party. Shop any thrift store, costume shop or feed store and they are easy to create. Folks can stick with the traditional or even go for a Western costume that is often overlooked for a truly unique getup.

Types

Everyone can get into Western costumes, from old men to young kids. Men, women and kids can bedeck themselves in jeans, a vest, plaid shirt, cowboy boots and hat. Couples can come as cowboy and cowgirl, a pair of old-time bank robbers or even a cowboy and Indian.

Identification

Western costumes are easily recognized by some of their featured elements. Lots of fringe, be it on a shirt or shawl, is a must. So are the cowboy hats, boots and vests that make it look like a person just sauntered off the plains. Extras can include a stick horse, sheriff's badge, handlebar mustache, holster with a gun and the infamous red bandanna tied about the neck or covering the face for a robber look.

Features

Comical effects can heighten the costume---and the hat. Folks can opt for giant, oversized cowboy hats to get a laugh or two, going for the true 10-gallon look. Any shirt, pants or accessory in cow print are also hits. Sticking a pair of real or fake steer horns on the side of the hat is also sure to get a laugh as well as the point across.

Misconceptions

Women don't have to dress like ranch hands to don a Western costume. Sexier versions of Western wear exist. A cowgirl may opt for a short, fringed skirt above her embellished cowboy boots. Long, Western gowns that would make Mae West proud are another option. Cancan dancers are also fun and flirty to emulate, with a tight bodice, flowing, short skirt, boa and a few plumes in the hair. Black and red are classic Western colors for the sexier options, but hot pink will do, too.

Potential

Don't forget the lesser thought of costumes to pay tribute to the Wild West. A biggie that's often overlooked is the Indian, which opens up a whole range of outfits created with beads, feathers and brown-suede fringe. Costumes can mimic one of the tons of animals that used to roam the plains before most of them were scared off or shot. These include buffalo, wild stallions, wolves, coyotes and even furry little jackrabbits.
