Seagulls are one coastal bird you can include in your craft project.
Finding needed craft supplies for any craft item is sometimes a chore. Creating artificial coastal birds could be simply paper-mache with glued-on feathers. Natural feathers found on nature walks, in the park or in your own yard make them more realistic. Wood forms also have been used with the addition of eyes, feathers and feet. Lightweight wood, such as balsam or bass wood, is excellent for carving birds.
Feathers
Packages of mixed color feathers can be purchased at most craft supply shops. Natural feathers also are available. Smaller feathers look more natural glued on in layers. Chicken, ostrich, peacock, pheasant and turkey feathers are good choices for creating birds. These may be obtained at local farms. Large-sized feathers can be cut so only the tip ends are used.
Beaks and Eyes
Create eyes by gluing on small metallic beads. Eyes can be painted on with any craft paint to look more natural. Beaks also can be painted, as well as the colors needed for the legs and feet. Outlines or markings on certain feathers and the feet and legs can be painted with craft paint or with paint pens.
Wire for Feet and Legs
Floral wire can be used to create the feet and legs. Regular craft wire can be wrapped with floral tape which can be painted if desired. Plastic-coated wire may be purchased at home improvement stores in a variety of colors. Most major retail stores carry several types of wire.
