Encourage family members to dress up for the family fun masquerade.
Many families enjoy playing board games on family fun nights. You can jazz up your family fun night by creating a masquerade theme. Teach kids about the history of carnival and masquerade balls. Center your theme around the table decorated with a masquerade centerpiece.
Interactive Centerpiece
Younger children will be intrigued with a centerpiece that they can contribute to. Find a masquerade mask coloring page that you can copy onto heavy card stock -- one for every child. Have the children color and decorate their masks. Tie string or corded elastic on the decorated masks so they may be worn later. Large decorative feathers, sequins and glitter are fun embellishments for the masks. Once they are completed, set the masks together in the center of the table. Coloring pages, games and books with a carnival and masquerade theme entertain and involve children for your themed family fun. Place a large jar of gold coins in the center of the table and have everyone try to guess how many coins are in the jar.
Decorative Centerpiece
Think glimmer, glitz and festive colors for your centerpiece. Traditional Mardi Gras masquerade colors are purple, green, blue and gold. However, almost any bright and festive colors will complement your masquerade centerpiece. Tall plume feathers, gold craft wire and a Venetian mask placed in a decorative vase make a perfect dramatic focal point for your festivities. A table covered with a decorative tablecloth and scattered with gold coins is a simple and quick centerpiece. Balloons in masquerade colors transform an ordinary table into the main attraction.
Food and Drink Centerpiece
Rather than spending hours decorating and making food for your family fun night, allow your menu to be the showpiece. Serve a traditional Mardi Gras feast consisting of a great pye, crawfish imperial and a king cake. Use purchased masquerade masks as place cards. Fill a clear tall vase with gold, green and purple bead necklaces to add some glimmer.
Lighting
Dig out those white twinkle lights from Christmas to accent your centerpiece. Votive, taper and ball candles add special mood lighting. If you are concerned about young children around candles, use flameless candles or place battery operated twinkle lights in colored vases. Placing candles in the freezer for a couple of hours prior to burning them will make them last longer.
