Steps To Make A Chinese Paper Fan

Chinese Fan

Chinese paper fans date back more than 2300 years. They were used to cover part of the face, to keep cool, to ward off evil spirits and to bring good fortune. The color red was used to scare off evil spirits and bad fortune. Gold was used to bring prosperity and good fortune to the person who owned the fan. Making a Chinese paper fan is a fun and exciting project.

Instructions

Process

1. Decorate both sides of the 3 pieces of copy paper with colored pencils, fine-lined markers, gel and glitter pens. Decorate 1 side of each of the 2 craft sticks.

2. Tape the 3 pieces of paper together on the 81/2 inch end. Tape on both sides of the seams to prevent separation. Fold the 8 1/2 inch end using a 1 inch accordion fold across the entire length.

3. Glue the undecorated side of a craft stick on each end of the accordion fold so 2 inches of the craft stick protrudes from the edge of the paper. Make sure the ends of each craft stick are on the same side of the fan. Set aside and let dry.

4. Hold one craft stick in each hand. Pull the craft sticks apart and around to meet each other. Turn the round shaped Chinese paper fan over and hold by the handle made from the 2 craft sticks.
