Dresses For Victorian Tea Parties

You may need a Victorian dress for a tea party.

If you've been invited to a Victorian-themed tea party, either for a wedding shower or other special event, you'll need a whimsical dress to go with the theme. There are a number of ways you can create a quick Victorian theme, using some basic items you may already have on hand.

Skirts

Victorian dresses had long skirts that went all the way down to the ankles. You can achieve this by wearing a long skirt. Victorian dresses also sometimes had bustles at the back or a short train at the back of the bottom hem. Look for skirts with these details at thrift stores or vintage shops.

Tops

You can pair your long skirt with a simple top with some Victorian touches. Choose tops with long sleeves and collars that button up high at the neck. You can even attach a brooch or cameo at the throat to give the top more of a Victorian look.

Materials

There are certain fabrics that can add to the Victorian feeling of your outfit. Look for garments that have lace, as lace was very popular in the Victorian era. Also, crocheted garments and white, gauzy materials were popular. For a more sophisticated Victorian dress, use materials like velvet or faux fur.

Accessories

Some accessories can finish off your simple Victorian dress. A shawl wrapped around your shoulders and some pearl jewelry are appropriate. You can also wear white gloves and a hat adorned with feathers. Don't forget to twist your hair back in a bun.
