Create a tiered wedding cake that reflects who you are.
Anyone who has seen the many cooking shows on cable TV knows that the possibilities for creating wedding cakes are endless. A skilled baker can produce just about any themed cake you want. Consider a multi-tiered cake that will be as memorable as your special day by incorporating a decorative theme that represents your personalities, interests, or the time of year.
Use Fresh Flowers
Using fresh flowers to decorate a wedding cake can tie into the season. Spring, when many weddings take place, is a perfect opportunity for such a theme. Of course, you have to make sure the flowers are edible and have not been sprayed with pesticides. Lavender, roses, dandelions, mums and gardenias are just some of the flowers you can incorporate into the cake's design. There are several ways to use the flowers. You can sprinkle the petals throughout the tiers, perhaps using a different flower on each tier, or you can place an entire bouquet on every tier. To unify the theme, have the flowers match up with the bouquets carried by the bride and her wedding party.
Tropical Theme
Romance and the tropics are synonymous, so a tropical theme wedding cake is quite appropriate. The first step is to bake a cake using tropical flavors such as banana, pineapple, coconut or mango. In fact, each tier of the cake could be a different tropical flavor. Create blue swirls of icing to represent waves crashing on the beach. Use bamboo as structural supports between each tier. Craft shells and pearls out of icing to serve as the cake's borders. Scatter tropical flower petals, such as hibiscus or orchids, around the base of the cake. For a whimsical cake topper, create a bride and groom in tropical garb, such as a grass skirt, coconut top, Hawaiian shirt and shorts.
Roaring '20s Theme
The Roaring '20s were a time of speakeasies, gangsters and molls, and vaudeville and flappers. It all lends itself well to a theme for a wedding cake. Ice the cake using an art deco look by using black and white geometric shapes. Incorporate feathers (a common fashion accoutrement for flappers) placed strategically throughout the tiers. For a wedding topper, consider gangster and moll figurines. The groom should be dressed in a dark suit and tie with a fedora hat and carrying a "violin" case. The bride figure should emulate the flapper look with tight, thigh-high glittery dress and a feather boa with a flower in her hair.
Outer Space Theme
For a science fiction-loving bride and groom, a quirky alien-themed cake is bound to be the talk of the reception. Use silver-colored fondant to cover the tiers of the cake and incorporate blue, yellow and white icing to add stars, moons and planets throughout. Create a ladder from chocolate-mint candy sticks that reaches from the bottom tier to the top tier. For the topper, mold a classic '50s-style flying saucer from fondant. Next to it, place the "alien" bride. She can resemble the iconic thin, gray alien with big eyes. Adorn her in wig and wedding dress. On the bottom tear, near the ladder, have the groom dressed as a scientist in a white lab coat looking up at his alien bride through a telescope. These can all be molded from fondant and iced in the appropriate colors.
