Knitting socks and summertime go well together.
The Eye of the Partridge is a technique used for making the heels of socks. When it is completed correctly, it will look like a lattice work. This is done by alternating the placement of slipped stitches. At the finish, the fabric has a little bit of give, yet it is still sturdy. The Eye of the Partridge is good to use when the width of the person's heel is known since the same number of stitches will not fit a narrow heel and a wide heel (See Resource 1).
Instructions
1. Reach the section in the pattern where the heel flap is being worked. Work on the first row, which will be the right side by slipping one stitch onto the right hand needle, as if knitting. Knit the next stitch. Repeat these two steps, slip one stitch, knit one stitch, across the flap end with knitting one stitch, even if two stitches need to be knitted at the end.
2. Work on row two by slipping one stitch, as if it were going to be purled. Purl the remainder of the stitches. Repeat this row for every even row.
3. Begin row three by slipping two stitches as if they were to be knitted, *Knit the next stitch, then slip the following stitch.* Repeat between the ** across the row.
4. Repeat these three rows for the number of rows specified in the sock pattern.
