Many craft stores sell plain masks to decorate.
An almost endless stream of design ideas exist for masks. Masks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, making them adaptable for many uses. From the whole head mask to a masquerade style, you can find one to suit the occasion. Whether the mask is store-bought or handmade, these decorating ideas work well.
Holiday
Decorate a mask to reflect a particular holiday. You can incorporate a mask into just about every holiday. Use paint, feathers, sequins, beads and other craft items to decorate the masks. For example, glue gauzy bandages onto a mask to make a mummy mask for Halloween. Gluing Mardi Gras beads and plastic coins to a white eye mask turns it into festive party accessory. You can decorate pre-made or homemade masks. Even the mask shape can reflect the holiday, like decorating a mask shaped like a rabbit face for Easter.
Animals
Many cultures use animals as a theme for masks. Utilize this theme by painting a mask to look like a certain animal. By using paint, you can create replication of the details of the animal. Add dimension to the mask by using craft items. For example, paint a mask blue, and then glue blue craft feathers to it to create a mask of a parakeet head. The feathers add a life-like feature to the piece. Others items like fake fur and fake leather give the mask a more realistic texture and appearance.
Characters
Turn a regular mask into a character from a book, movie, television show or comic book. Use the mask for a costume party or pretend play. Paints works the best for making the mask look like the particular character. Depending on the type of mask you make, you can use a wig for the hair. For example, if you were making a mask of the Incredible Hulk, glue a wig of dark green hair to the top of the mask. Use items like cloth or scarves to create eye masks or other features on the piece. You could even form a pair of glasses from wires to put onto the mask for more character features. Some characters to make masks of include Superman, Darth Vader, Minnie Mouse, Iron Man, Bozo the Clown and Cat Woman.
Decorative Designs
Masks work well as decorations. By using decorative designs and patterns, you can match a mask to fit a particular theme or room. Stripes, spots and checkerboards are just a few of the designs applicable to masks. Use virtually any material to make the design. For example, create a checkerboard pattern by gluing small ceramic squares to a mask. Affix rhinestones to the cheek of a white mask in a spiral to make a small, simple design.
