The home theater market is still growing.
Opening a video store is a great way to make money and enjoy movies at the same time. By expanding your business model beyond the scope of the standard chain store you'll have access to all the customers you need or could want. Using an unlimited plan rental sales model, where customers pays to have a certain number of movies out at a time and as many as they want per month builds brand loyalty and encourages customers to move to bigger and better packages.
Instructions
1. Locate a storefront that is ideally suited to a video store business. You might be able to do this alone, however, a real estate consultant would be very helpful. Ideally you want your video store to be the only one within 30 minutes of foot travel and 15 minutes drive time to maximize business. Once you've located your storefront, you'll need to start on renovations and signage. The rule of thumb for signage is to keep it simple, and easy to read from a distance.
2. Spend a little extra on interior design as compared to chain stores, having a unique motif will set you apart and have customers wanting to come back to peek around. Consider having custom wood shelves made instead of having the run of the mill, industrial-looking metal shelves. Head to the nearest movie poster shop and apply posters of your favorites liberally to the walls. Ask the shopkeeper for cardboard movie promos from theaters, as they make a fairly cheap piece of permanent eye candy. When it comes to the basics of renovations, have a seating area for customers to rest and watch previews, a snack bar for impulse popcorn and sodas, as well as a well-kept public washroom and clean walls/floors.
3. Collect an inventory. You'll want a blend of old classics and new hits, and at least 50 titles in each major category (action/adventure, animation, comedy, documentary, drama, family and kids, foreign, horror, music by genre and performing arts, and mystery/thriller. When buying your inventory you'll want to find a seller that will give you a volume purchasing discount. Don't hesitate to shop around. When determining how many copies of a particular movie to buy, use the five-star system to decide. A one-star movie only needs a single copy in stock, a five-star classic will need at least five copies, double that for hyped and critically acclaimed new releases, selling some discount used copies off later once the buzz has died down.
4. Contact a web-design specialist and have him build you a website complete with automated sign-up forms that prompt the user for detailed personal information, held in confidence, pertaining to providing service. Name, address, home phone number and information for a major credit card are par for the course. Monthly rental packages automatically billed to credit cards ensure steady residual income. Make customers aware that you will bill them via credit card for videos not returned after a certain date. Newer cuttin- edge rental businesses allow customers to have a certain number of videos (depending on their rental package) out indefinitely and, provided they return their videos, an infinite number of rentals.
5. Install a database system to record memberships, catalog videos and record who has rented which items. For smaller shops typical office productivity software can suffice, however, a custom-made program will definitely be worth the extra cost. Additionally you'll need a point of sale system, preferably one that goes beyond cash only, offering debit and credit card transactions. The more payment methods you accept, the lower the chances you'll turn away a customer.
6. Resurface discs that customers bring back with playback errors. You'll need a professional-quality resurfacing kit for this. Buy one that fits your price range, but recognize that investing in a high-quality resurfacing kit will save you replacement costs in the long term.
