Make your own wings for a firefly costume.
Whether for a school play, project, or costume party, wings are the finishing touch to a firefly costume. However, there is no need to spend a lot of money ordering wings from a costume shop or online. Instead, save some money and ensure they will match the costume by making the wings at home. The wings are easy to make, and with the right materials it can be softer than some store-bought wings.
Instructions
1. Measure how wide and tall you want the fairy wings to be.
2. Bend the armature wire to form two uppercase Bs the width and height that you want. Keep the Bs the same size as much as possible. Once the Bs are finished, stretch them out to get the desired look of a firefly wing. The wings of a firefly are more oblong than round. Armature wire is thick wire that can be found at many craft stores. Wire hangers can be used instead.
3. Wrap each B twice with the tulle. Thread the needle. Sew along the inside of the wire about 1/4-inch from the wire. You will have to cut the thread and rethread the needle to get all the way around the wire.
4. Cut a 4 or 5-inch piece of ribbon. Sew a button onto the ribbon about 1/4 from the edge.
5. Cut one more piece of ribbon. One long enough to tie around the waist.
6. Place the ribbon for the waist flat on the work surface. Position the wings on top of it facing opposite directions. The straight side of the wings should have about 2 inches between them. Mark where the wings fall on the ribbon.
7. Grab one of the wings and sew the waist ribbon to it. Keep in mind of the mark you made. Also, keep in mind how low the ribbon must fall to tie around your waist.
8. Sew the ribbon with the button to the center of the straight edge of the wing. Use the button to secure it in place. This piece of ribbon will connect the two wings.
9. Sew the second wing to the ribbons as well.
10. Glue the boas to the outside of the wings. You can use multiple layers of feather boas to create really soft wings. Trim off any excess.
