Instruct kids to use real ducks as inspiration as they draw or paint.
If your kids are always begging to go to the park to feed the ducks or are currently learning about these water birds, they'll love making duck crafts out of construction paper, paper plates and other common household craft items. Create these crafts on rainy or winter days to keep the kids entertained. Afterward, proudly display the duck masterpieces on the refrigerator.
Paper Plate Ducks
For paper plate ducks, you will need a paper plate, scissors, glue, a stapler, a pencil, yellow construction paper, orange construction paper, paint, paintbrushes and wiggly eyes. Trace both hands on the yellow construction paper and cut the shapes out. Fold the paper plate in half and paint it yellow. Staple your hand cutouts to one end of the folded paper plate to form the duck's tail feathers. To make the duck's head, cut a circle with a diameter of about 3 inches from yellow construction paper. Next, cut out feet and a bill for the duck from the orange construction paper. Glue the beak to the center of the head so it points down, then glue on the wiggly eyes. Staple the head on the opposite side of the tail feathers. Staple the feet to the bottom of the paper plate, one foot on each side.
Feathered Footprint Ducks
In order to create a feathered footprint duck, you will need yellow construction paper, yellow feathers, a pencil, glue, scissors and crayons. To make the basic shape of a duck, have the children trace their foot---while wearing a shoe---on a piece of yellow construction paper, then cut the shape out. Turn the toe part of the foot into the duck's head by drawing eyes and a beak with crayons or markers. Next, give your duck some feathers. Cover the body of the duck with glue and cover the area with feathers.
Swimming Ducks
The swimming duck craft requires yellow, blue, white and orange construction paper along with a pencil, crayons, scissors and paste. Trace around one hand on the white paper, then cut the shape out. This will be the duck's wing. On the yellow construction paper, draw a duck body and head, then cut them out. Draw feet and a beak on the orange paper, then cut them out. Glue all the pieces together on the blue construction paper to form a duck in the water. Draw a face on the duck and water lines around the duck using the crayons.
Duck Masks
To make a duck mask, you need a paper plate, yellow construction paper, yellow yarn, crayons, glue and a craft stick. Cut a circle slightly smaller than the size of the paper plate out of the yellow construction paper. Fold the circle in half and glue it to the bottom half of the paper plate to form the duck's beak. Draw nostrils on the beak and eyes on the paper plate. Cut about 10 pieces of yarn, approximately 2 inches in length. Glue them to the top of the paper plate for hair. Finally, glue the craft stick to the bottom of the paper plate so you can hold the mask over your face.
