Roaring Twenties Birthday Celebration Ideas

Break out the feathered headbands and sparkly dresses for a Roaring Twenties party.

A Roaring Twenties theme promises a fabulously good time for a birthday party. The 1920s was a glamorous decade, known for its speakeasies, art deco style, flappers, dapper suits and snazzy music. By embracing highlights from the era when planning your event, the birthday party is sure to be a fun, classy affair.

Costumes

Dress up like a flapper.

Have guests participate in the theme and ask them to dress up in traditional 1920s garb. Women can achieve the flapper look with fringed dresses, headbands with feathers and long beaded necklaces. Evening gowns decked out with flashy jewels, a feather boa and a cloche hat will also look smashing. Men can go for the gangster look by wearing pin-striped suits, wing-tip shoes and sleek fedoras. A fake gun will complete the gangster get-up.

Setting the Scene

For an authentic Roaring Twenties party, host the festivities at a vintage-looking cocktail bar. Achieve the ambiance of a dimly lit speakeasy by lowering the lights, lighting candles and even creating a romantic mist with a fog machine. Wine bottles can easily be converted to candle holders by sliding a taper candle into the opening and letting the melting wax drip down the side of the bottle. Including some art deco-inspired accents (such as posters) and music from the 1920s (such as jazz or ragtime) will make the party look like its part of the Roaring Twenties.

Food & Drinks

Serve up some delicious fare to keep the birthday festivities roaring. Italian favorites, such as spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread or pizza are sure to please a variety of people and stay true to the gangster-inspired party. A Roaring Twenties birthday wouldn't be complete without some alcoholic drinks. Let guests pick from a variety of mixed drinks, champagne and gin, of course. For dessert, treat guests to cannoli or mousse served in a martini glass.

Activities

While mingling, visiting with one another and sipping on some delicious cocktails may be enough for some parties, other hosts may wish to include some activities for their Roaring Twenties party. Rather than having some jazz playing in the background, have a jazz band perform a show for the guests. Screen an old film from the 1920s to inspire the guests. Turn up some music and let guests show off their dance moves by doing the Charleston. To commemorate the event, take polaroid pictures of the guests in their costumes and let them keep a copy.
