A flower can take the place of a bridal veil.
Veils are a traditional part of weddings, but more contemporary options are available today if veils are not your style. Decorative hair ties provide function and decoration to the bride's hairstyle as they pull hair back while also providing sparkle in her hair. Natural accents, jewelry and hats provide a few more options for the modern bride.
Tiara
A tiara is a common substitution for a veil. It looks like a crown so it gives an air of beauty and sophistication. Brides can wear their hair in an updo with a tiara so the tiara stands out even more or they can wear it on top of long, flowing hair. Tiaras come in a variety of sizes, including small thin tiaras to large tiaras that resemble royal crowns. Tiaras with decorative patterns, such as elaborate vines are also available. Plastic, crystal and rhinestones are some of the material options available.
Barrettes and Pins
Decorative barrettes can help adorn a bride's hair to make a simple and elegant statement. Larger barrettes that come with clips and hair sticks that pin into the back of a bun are two options. Place the barrettes near the top of the hairstyle or to hold hair back by the bride's ears. Decorative bobby pins with crystals or rhinestones provide decoration and function by holding hair in place. Stick pearl hairpins into the back of an updo to add a sparkly accent to the hairstyle.
Hair Comb
Decorative hair combs consist of metal teeth that are covered by hair and a decorative top that is visible from far away. Combs come in a variety of colors and can be used to match the bride's hair color, or opt for traditional white, pearl, silver or gold combs.
Headband
Bridal headbands come in a variety of styles. On the simpler end of the spectrum is a plain white band that stretches over a portion of the top part of the bride's head. More elaborate styles include very thick headbands that cover most of the bride's crown of her head and feature satin, jewels, lace or large flowers.
Flower
Sometimes the florist helps come up with part of the bride's hairstyle. She may tie a large, fresh flower in the bride's hair that matches the bride's bouquet. An alternative is to tie small flowers in the back of the bride's hair with floral wire. A floral wreath provides a natural headpiece ideal for an outdoor wedding in a garden or gazebo.
Netting
If you like the look of a birdcage veil, but want to avoid the weight of an entire veil, use netting to achieve a similar effect. Tie the bride's hair in the back with a decorative tieback, such as an ostrich feather tie. Glue white netting to part of the tieback that covers one side of the bride's hair and small portion of her face. This style adds a sense of regal elegance and vintage flair.
Hats
The bride can wear a white hat in place of a traditional veil. Bridal hats can take the form of a big, floppy white hat with a wide brim. A small hat that is set on one side of the bride's head is another option.
