Steps To Make A Rabbit Mascot Headpiece

Rabbits, like other animals, can be a team mascot.

Mascots bring good luck to teams as they play a sport. These mascots usually come in the form of animals or cartoon characters, and they perform on the sidelines to add spirit to the audience, getting them to cheer for the team. Originally, fiberglass was used to make mascot heads, but foam is lighter and easier to sculpt. Because it gets very warm inside a foam head, and the performer is often very physically active, it is important to include a battery-powered fan in the back and create a well-ventilated face.

Instructions

1. Sketch a design for the rabbit mascot to be used as a guide while building the head.

2. Cut squares of foam about three inches thick and slightly wider and deeper than the wearer's head. Stack them high enough that the wearer's head will fit inside.

3. Cut two long strips of foam to be the ears of the rabbit head.

4. Hollow out a space in the center of the foam with a utility knife. Make the space large enough for the wearer's head to fit but leave enough foam to keep the shape of the head.

5. Carve from the outside of the foam to form the three-dimensional shape of the rabbit's face and head. Use the drawing as a guide.

6. Carve the fine shape of the ears. Then carve notches into the top of the head where the ears can fit snugly.

7. Cut a channel from under the muzzle of the rabbit's face to where the wearer's mouth will be inside the head. Make this channel at least 1 1/2 inches wide to allow plenty of air to get to the wearer.

8. Place a black wire mesh screen over the hole under the rabbit's muzzle, hiding it from the outside viewer. Glue this in place using rubber cement.

9. Disassemble the layers of the head and spray glue on the connecting surfaces. Then stick the layers together. Also spray the glue into the notches on the top of the head and insert the ears. Allow the glue to dry.

10. Carve large eye holes so the wearer can see out of the mascot head.

11. Place black wire mesh screens over the eye holes. Glue these in place using rubber cement.

12. Carve a hole in the back of the head slightly smaller than the battery-powered fan. Then carve the shape of the fan over the hole but not completely through the foam. Line the bottom of this shape with Velcro.

13. Line the bottom of the fan with Velcro and place it into the hole so it fits snugly. This will allow the fan to be removed and the batteries easily changed.

14. Cover the fan with wire mesh.

15. Cut pieces of furry fabric, and spray glue them onto the outside of the head as needed to cover the foam. Use gray for the rabbit's fur, white for the muzzle, black for the nose and pink for the inside of the ears.

16. Allow all glue to dry before wearing the mascot head.
