Designing Suggestions For An Outfit Party

Use masks and costume accessories in decorating.

The glam and glitter of a costume party provide lots of visual interest. Either keep decorations to a minimum to focus on the guests, or go over the top with decorations. After you've decided on a theme for the d cor, go through your own furnishings, accessories, clothes and even holiday decorations for what you can use. For example, a black lace shawl could become a table runner.

Favorite Literary Character

A common theme for a custom party is to come as your favorite literary character. There's no commonality to the character costumes, so create one with the decorations. Choose a well-known book or movie and play off those themes. For example: Create the castle in "Camelot" with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Cover the walls with gray stone-patterned paper. Hang banners with coats of arms from the ceiling. Create a few turrets with flags hanging from them. If you can manage to find a suit of armor, that would be perfect. Carry the theme through with the food served with pewter plates and cups on a rough-hewn table.

Masquerade Glitter

Let your imagination go with a fantasy d cor for a masquerade costume party. Think Venice as you hang half-masks decorated with sequins on the walls. Place feather boas over furniture. Use top hats sprayed with glitter as vases for sprays of orchids. Put a glass inside the hat to hold the water for the flowers. Cover the table with a tasseled brocade cloth in deep ruby. Use gold and silver chargers under the food plates. Fill crystal bowls with sequined fruits. Hang shiny beads as curtains between rooms and over the windows. Use candles everywhere, but keep safety in mind.

Halloween

Halloween is the costume party of the year. Give yours a twist and stay away from the same old same old orange and black, ghosts and goblins. Instead, go for an elegantly haunted house look. Hang tulle sprayed with iridescent glitter over the windows. Set up a fan where it softly ripples the tulle. Cover the table with silver Mylar and then with a black lace tablecloth. Shop charity stores for silver-plate vases, trays and accessories. If they're tarnished, it's even better. Dig up a couple of tall candelabras and swag them with spiderwebs. Gild white pumpkins by sponging on gold paint. If you can't find white pumpkins, spray-paint orange ones an eggshell color and then gild. Cover one wall with Mylar and then drape on either side with sheer curtains. The Mylar will eerily shimmer with the guests' reflections.
