Promenade Boutonniere Ideas

There many ways to make a boutonniere unique for prom.

For high school students, the prom is the highlight of the year where students get paired with dates for the big night. To make it even more special, it is the tradition for a girl to give her date a boutonniere to wear on his jackets for the prom. A boutonniere is a small arrangement usually containing one or two types of flowers along with a bit of fern or greens. There are many ways to make the boutonniere unique and special. You can make it yourself or have a florist create it.

Flowers

Flowers are the common choices for a boutonniere. However, there is a way to update this traditional look by adding a new twist to it. Sturdy flowers that will last through the night without wilting are good choices such as roses, gerbera daisies and orchids. To make them unique, cut off the stems and replace with decorative wire or bullion wire that matches the flowers. You can also insert matching beads into the wire to make it more decorative.

Dramatic Leaves and Accents

If you want to leave the flowers out but still want some greenery, consider using a dramatic-looking leaf such as the gold dust dracaena leaves which are dark green, sturdy and oval-shaped leaves with splotches of light green and cream. Wrap it around something other than flowers such as sisal, a kind of fiber cultivated from the agave plant that is colored and used to make twine or rope. Colored sisal can be found from most florists stores and you can match the color of sisal to the theme of the event. You can also add pearl pins on the sisal and finish off by wrapping the bottom part of the dracaena leaves with gold colored bullion wire and inserting a few Craspedia or Billy Balls in between the wire for added originality. Billy Balls are firm one-inch flower heads shaped like a ball that can make a boutonniere more visually attractive.

Braided Wheat, Berries and Acorns

These items will add a feeling of earthiness to the boutonniere, which boys will appreciate because of its "non-girly" look. Braided wheat will look elegant when wrapped with a rich chocolate-brown satin ribbon. Berries and acorns can be tied together with twigs to give it a rustic look. If it is winter when you will have the prom, you can replace the acorns with pine cones.

Feathers

If the prom escort is especially adventurous, he can get away with having feathers for his boutonniere. Two vibrant colored peacock feathers can be tied together with a turquoise blue satin ribbon for an eye-catching boutonniere. If you want a more muted color, you can use pheasant feathers paired with brown goose feathers and tie them together with a dark brown or silver satin ribbon.
