Steps To Make A Headband Having A Top Hat

Top hat fascinators can be the classic black top hat, or more colorful.

Top hat fascinators are are seen at all kinds of game, comic book and fan conventions. It is common to see them glued or sewn to headbands, which serves the dual purpose of keeping your hair in place as well as affixing the top hat firmly.

Instructions

1. Trace a circle with the pencil and compass on the card stock that is 7 inches in diameter. Draw another smaller circle that is 4 inches in diameter. Using the ruler, draw a rectangle that is 13 inches in length and 3.5 inches wide. Cut the shapes out with the scissors.

2. Lay the smaller circle on your fabric. Trace a circle that is a quarter-inch larger than your top hat. It does not have to be exact. Draw a rectangle that is 13 inches long and 4 inches wide. Trace the larger circle on the fabric twice. In one of the larger circles, place the smaller circle in the center and trace it. Cut all of these shapes out. You will have a large circle, a small circle, a rectangle and a ring.

3. Tape the paper rectangle so that it forms a cylinder 3.5 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter. You will need to overlap the paper a little bit. Tape the smaller paper circle to the top. Center the fabric over the top, and glue it in place. You will have some excess fabric. Glue this fabric to the side of the cylinder. Cut slits in the fabric so that it lays flat. Wrap the rectangle around the top so that it fits. The top should come to the edge of the top of the hat, with the excess hanging off of the bottom.

4. Cut slits in the excess fabric hanging off the bottom of the top cylinder every half inch or so. Slit the fabric up to the body of the hat. When you are done, center the cylinder on the larger card stock circle and glue the loose fabric flaps fanning out from the body of the hat. Pull the ring of fabric over the top of the hat. Glue it down on the top of the brim of the hat, over the fabric flaps. Take the largest circle of fabric and glue it to the bottom of the hat.

5. Glue your feathers to a part of the hat at the base of the cylinder, above the brim. This will be the back of your hat. Cut 13 inches of ribbon and glue it around the base of the hat, over the ends of the feathers. Place the trim around the edge of the brim, and cut to length. Glue it in place around the edge of the brim to cover up the paper edge.

6. Glue the bottom of your hat to your headband, wherever you want the top hat to sit. If you are using bias tape, cut enough to go around the top of your head and under your hair and tie it in a knot. A foot-and-a-half should be more than enough, but measure against your head to be sure. Decide where on your head you want the hat to rest, and glue it to the bias tape.
