Not much guarantees that your earrings will be unique quite like making them yourself. And with do-it-yourself projects as popular as ever, it's easy to find jewelry-making supplies and tools at craft stores and on the Internet. Most anyone can do it. Not only will your one-of-a-kind pieces add style and flair to your wardrobe, but they could turn into a profitable venture as well.

1. Choose which type of earrings you want to make. There are four basic types: hooks, posts and backs, hoops and clip-ons. Most craft stores carry a wide selection of each type. If you are a beginner, you might want to opt for an economical choice, such as a small package of hooks that allow you to try your hand at several pairs before investing in pricier jewelry-making supplies.
2. Before you leave the craft store, make sure you have the proper tools to assemble your earrings. For beaded earrings, you may need jewelry wire and pliers. For some post or clip-on varieties, a strong glue might be all you need to affix items.
3. Select decorative elements, which could be almost anything from beads to buttons, molded plastic to mini-sculptures, pompoms to faux flowers. You could even transfer photo images to durable fabric, plastic or laminated card stock for a real personal touch. Let your creativity be your guide.
4. Assemble your earrings. The method will depend largely on the type of earrings you are making and the decorative elements you have chosen. You may string beads or other items through jewelry wire or string, which threads through loops on hooks. Or you may glue or screw posts. Follow any package instructions carefully.
