Crafts For Children To Create & Sell

Simple supplies are adequate for many kids crafts.

Craft projects are a great way for children to try their hand at making their own money. They can sell these items to friendly neighbors, or set up a table at garage sales, church and school events or craft fairs. While they are unlikely to make a huge profit, these attractive crafts are affordable to make and can help kids explore the world of business.

Paperweights

The best part about homemade paperweights is that the materials needed to make them are often free. Scout around your garden for smooth rocks. Wash these off and provide paints and a newspaper-covered surface for transforming the stones into attractive paperweights. Even if the designs seem a bit awkward, they will have that precious touch that a child's hand seems to lend to any piece of artwork. Each item is sure to be distinct, offering buyers a one-of-a-kind piece. Since the cost of supplies is so low, you can make a profit selling these at almost any price.

Pressed Flower Art

Pressed flowers are so delicate and enchanting on their own that nearly any crafter can create a masterpiece with them. Peruse your garden, collecting flowers at the height of their bloom. Press flowers and leaves between the pages of a heavy book or in a simple flower press, available at any craft store. Once they have dried, use the pressed flowers to make bookmarks, framed artwork or greeting cards. Carefully glue the flowers to the surface of your item. Cover with self-laminating paper if you are not framing the finished product. Print quotes and poems onto these paper goods to accompany the flower design. Encourage the young entrepreneurs to find meaningful pieces of prose for their products.

Feather Art

Purchase brightly dyed feathers at a craft supply store. Consider each feather as a paint stroke and arrange them on a piece of heavy cardstock in an attractive design or image. Affix each feather to the paper with a small dot of glue applied to the end. Buy cheap frames from a thrift store or a garage sale to frame the finished pieces.

Cookies

Edible crafts are among the easiest to sell. Whether your venue is a school bake sale or a lemonade stand, young entrepreneurs will have no trouble finding customers for a business offering edible works of art. With adult supervision, let kids decorate basic sugar cookies with frosting, sprinkles and candy. Experiment with different mix-ins, making cookies with chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, candy pieces, dried cranberries, nuts or any combination of similar items. Package the masterpieces individually or in containers of half a dozen or a dozen cookies.
