Steps To Make Awesome Stuff In Class

Students love making cool stuff in school.

When you think of making stuff in school, clay models and paper mache crafts come to mind. These creations are fun to make, but not the kind of pieces you actually want to use afterward. Show your students how to make other cool stuff, focusing on items they can actually use. Have them make their own designs on computer for a custom tote bag or a T-shirt. Show them how to create cool photo frames for their rooms at home. The results will be cool stuff that your elementary, middle and high school students love and use.

Instructions

Custom Bag

1. Buy solid color cotton or canvas tote bags and duffel bags. Let your students choose which type bag to decorate.

2. Instruct students to create their own designs for the bags on a computer. Suggest that they use clip art, photographs, school mascot images and text. Make separate designs for each student's name.

3. Print designs onto iron-on fabric transfer paper. Check and approve the designs before the students use them.

4. Iron the designs onto each student's bag.

5. Use a glue gun to attach feather boas, plastic gems and pom poms for students who want a glamorous look.

6. Use a glue gun to attach felt varsity letters and numbers or foam sport stickers for students who want an athletic look.

Custom T-Shirt

7. Buy cotton T-shirts in solid colors. Consider using tees in your school's colors or white tees.

8. Instruct students to make T-shirt designs on a computer. Offer ideas such as images of school mascots, the school name, the school's team name. Suggest that students use photos of the class or of each other and a text caption. Consider relating the tee craft to a lesson plan. For example, make earth designs during a lesson on the environment. Make separate designs for each student's name to go on the back of the tee.

9. Print the computer designs onto iron-on fabric transfer paper.

10. Iron the designs onto the students' T-shirts. Encourage them to wear them to school on the same day to show off their creations.

Photo Frame

11. Buy plastic or unfinished wooden photo frames at a craft store.

12. Tell your students to paint the frames white.

13. Use a glue gun to attach decorations to the frames. Give students the choice of attaching white buttons, plastic gems or personal photos onto each frame.

14. Take fun photos of students with you or with their friends, and print them onto photo paper.

15. Put the new photos into the frames.
