Thanksgiving Crafts For Infants

Turkeys work well as the theme for infant Thanksgiving crafts.

Babies are often overlooked at craft time. While they don't have the fine motor skills of toddlers and older kids, babies can handle basic craft activities. Using the craft supplies can actually help them hone their fine motor skills. Keep the Thanksgiving theme in mind as you plan your infant craft activities for November. The Thanksgiving crafts offer entertainment and create a keepsake for the parents.

Hand Print Turkey

The hand print turkey is a classic Thanksgiving craft for kids of all ages. It works well as a keepsake to record the size of the infant's hand on that Thanksgiving. The basic format of the craft involves painting the child's palm and fingers to create a turkey. The palm and thumb are painted brown and represent the body, head and neck of the turkey. Each of the fingers are painted a different color to create the feathers. Press the child's hand onto a piece of card stock or other sturdy paper. Write the child's name and the date on the picture as a record. The hand print turkeys work well for Thanksgiving cards to distant relatives, place mats for Thanksgiving dinner or wall hangings around Thanksgiving. Frame the picture of the hand print turkey as a Thanksgiving keepsake for the infant's grandparents.

Finger Painting

This activity also involves paint, but this time it is edible. Pudding is used as the paint material making it ideal for infants. If the baby licks his fingers, there's no concern for his health or safety, since it is pudding. Cut out a turkey shape for the pudding finger painting project. Chocolate pudding works well for the body and head of the turkey. For the feathers, use vanilla pudding tinted with food coloring. Show your baby how to paint the turkey cutouts with the pudding and her fingers. Hang the turkey on the wall as a Thanksgiving decoration.

Ice Painted Leaves

Leaves are another common decoration around Thanksgiving. This craft gives the babies a new way to paint. You'll need large leaf-shaped cutouts as the base of the craft. Mix a small amount of water with food coloring and pour it into an ice cube tray. Choose colors, such as red, orange, yellow and brown that work well for fall leaves. Cover the tray with aluminum foil and press a toothpick or craft stick through the foil into the sections of the ice cube tray. The foil keeps the sticks straight as the ice cubes freeze. When they are solid, remove the foil. The infant uses the toothpick or craft stick as a handle to rub the iced cube on the leaf cutout. As the ice cube melts, the food coloring tints the paper to create colorful leaves.
