How To Get Wood Ducks For Your Pond In New York

The head of male wood ducks is striking due to vibrant colors.

Wood ducks, also called Carolina ducks, are native waterfowl in both North and South Carolina; as well as throughout portions of North America. Male wood ducks, distinguishable based on their bright green head feathers and red rimmed eyes, are beautiful creatures to have floating in a pond or lake. If you are trying to attract wood ducks to your own pond in North Carolina, use items known to attract and satisfy wood ducks.

Instructions

1. Place food around your pond suitable for wood ducks. Use nuts and seeds placed around the pond to draw the wood ducks in. Wood ducks also enjoy acorns, which can readily be found at the base of oak trees growing throughout North Carolina. Oak trees grow quite well in North Carolina. In fact, the city of Raleigh is informally referred to as "The City of Oaks." Other suitable trees preferred by wood ducks, and suitable for growing in North Carolina, include elm, beech and maple trees.

2. Plant fruit trees around your pond. Wood ducks enjoy fruit and will eat the fruit that has fallen to the ground. Suitable fruit trees to grow in North Carolina include Asian pear, apple, peaches, pears and nectarines. Know that you may need to plant more mature trees in order to produce fruit faster to lure the wood ducks to your property.

3. Stock your pond with crayfish and snails which will fare well in the Northern Carolina climate during the mating season for wood ducks. Know that wood ducks typically stick to a more vegetarian diet, however, some will eat fish so avoid stocking your pond with expensive fish breeds such as koi.

4. Use aquatic plants in your pond. Sea grass, duckweed, pondweed, and lily pads all will grow in North Carolina and help attract wood ducks. The greenery in the pond attract wood ducks as they like to float through the tall grasses and leaves, nibbling at some of the plants from time to time.

5. Allow fallen trees and branches to remain in and around your pond. Wood ducks like to perch and will sit atop such fallen limbs. Know that wood ducks will nest and breed in fallen trees and branches. The ducks prefer to make nests in wood, hence their name.

6. Do not spray for insects or use insecticides. Wood ducks also like to eat insects and having naturally occurring insects around your pond will further attract the ducks.
