Steps To Make A Mad Hatter'S Hat

You can use a store-bought top hat as the base for this project.

The Mad Hatter is a main character from "Alice in Wonderland." You can create your own Mad Hatter hat using items you already have at home in just a few hours. Wear your character piece as a fashion statement or as part of a costume for Halloween or other occasions.

Instructions

Base

1. Use the tape measure to find the circumference of your head by measuring the area where the hat will sit on your head. Roll poster board width-wise into a cylinder that fits the circumference you determined with the tape measure. Tape the seam of the cylinder with masking tape.

2. Measure a 6-inch diameter circle on the foam board. Place the poster board cylinder on the center of the 6-inch circle. Secure using four equally spaced pieces of masking tape and then complete the seal with the hot glue.

3. Wrap the thick fabric around the exterior of the cylinder and foam top. Start at the top of the hat, indicated by the foam circle, and put the fabric flush around the edge of the foam so it drapes down around the cylinder. Hot glue the fabric to the foam circle and glue the overlapping excess material to finish the edge.

4. Turn the cylinder over and apply hot glue to the inside rim. Pull the fabric taut, stretching it over the edge and press into the hot glue. Use the hot glue to attach the circle of fabric to the top of the hat covering the exposed foam circle.

Rim

5. Spread the linen on a flat surface. Place the open end of the cylinder on the linen and draw an outline of the cylinder on the linen using the pencil. Remove the cylinder and draw another circle inside the outline. This circle does not have to be exact, but should leave an approximately 1-inch distance between the two circles. Cut the inner circle out and make slits from the cut area out to the outline in 1-inch segments.

6. Make a circle that is 9 inches in diameter using the thick wire. Wrap the electric tape around the ends of the wire to secure the circle. Place the wire circle evenly around the circle on the linen. Cut a circle out of the linen that extends past the wire, so approximately 1 inch of material is left to fold over the wire. Set the wire circle aside and continue with the linen.

7. Turn the hat over so the open cylinder is facing upward. Place the cut linen over the opening so the flaps are pointed inward and hanging over the edge. Hot glue the flaps to the inside rim of the cylinder. Turn the hat over and center the hat over the top of the wire circle to make the edge of the brim of the hat.

8. Pull the linen taut over the top of the wire circle and fold underneath. Pin the fabric into place with straight pins inserted around the inside perimeter of the wire circle all the way around the hat brim. Sew a seam on the inside of the wire circle with the needle and thread. Remove the straight pins and trim the excess fabric.

Embellishment

9. Spray paint the hat using navy, maroon or forest green, or use a combination of the colors to paint segments different colors.

10. Tie the salmon ribbon around the base of the hat twice and into a knot so the tail of the ribbon falls down the back of the hat.

11. Print the words "In this style 10/6" on the front of the white card. Insert the tag into the side of the hat tucked into the ribbon.
