Retro Party Ideas

A touch of glamour

Throw a retro star-studded party evoking the days of Old Hollywood. Go glitzy with satins and sequins, fedoras and berets. Pick one of the big five movie studios or the more glamorous times of the Golden Age. Give tribute to the celebrities and GIs of WWII with an USO Canteen party. Add Hollywood décor with scene setters, posters, movie cameras and gold stars. Serve food authentic to the era.

RKO Pictures

Make invitations with the infamous RKO logo announcing a Technicolor costume party. Guests should dress as stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and John Barrymore or Howard Hughes.

Roll out a red carpet to the front door. Hang twinkling star lights and deck the walls with giant movie posters of "King Kong," "Babes in Toyland" and "Citizen Kane." Let guests autograph gold stars arranged on the floor. Hang 3D movie lanterns, and add a gold star centerpiece to the table.

Supply disposable flash cameras to record party memories in paparazzi fashion.

Serve Ginger Rogers cocktails, Katharine Hepburn brownies, Lucille Ball's Persimmon Cake or Strawberry Pie Glace together with other dishes. Premiere one of RKO's first movies on the big screen.

Golden Age of Hollywood

Set the stage with glamour by creating invitations with a touch of 1930's Hollywood. Embellish them with sparkling rhinestones and metallic ribbon against black. Scribe details with a silver gel pen.

Dress up like Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Humphrey Bogart and Jimmy Stewart, to name a few.

Hang red drapes with a Hollywood cityscape scene setter behind. Choose gold, silver and black decorations with silver cutlery. Scatter black feathers and crystal gems on a white satin tablecloth. For the centerpiece, fill a crystal vase with white star flowers. Suspend glittery star swirls from the ceiling. Play the Big Band sounds of Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Cab Calloway.

Offer 1930 popular drinks such as bourbon, tomato juice cocktails and ginger ale. Provide canapés like rolled toast with mushrooms or asparagus and cheese puffs. Bake a Betty Boop cake along with petits fours and maple meringue cookies.

Hollywood Canteen

Use the 1940's USO (United Service Organizations) theme by creating invitations with a stars-and-stripes motif. Guests can dress as canteen hostesses, Rosie the Riveter, GIs or USO performers of that era such as the Andrew Sisters and Bob Hope.

Use red and white decorations. Hang WWII posters such as Let's All Pull Together or Betty Grable pin-ups. Suspend WWII gliders from the ceiling, and string patriotic lanterns around the room. Affix a USO banner to the wall.

Dance the night away to Big Bands such as Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Include 1940 classics from Frank Sinatra, Carmen Miranda and Bing Crosby.

Prepare 1940 USO canteen dishes. Serve coffee, cordials and punch. Assemble plates of assorted crackers, Melba toast and cheese. Prepare roast beef sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers, apple pie and Honey Spice cake. Disperse bowls of mini chocolate bars and even marshmallows.
