Trapping Strategies For Bobcats

If you have a bobcat hanging around your property, you had better make sure your animals are safe and any poultry pens are closed tight. Bobcats can easily jump a 6-foot fence and are very good climbers, so structures such as wooden fence posts just assist the bobcat in getting onto your land. The best thing to do is to trap the bobcat and transport him away from your property.

Steel Leg Hold Trap

If you plan to trap a bobcat, use fresh bait, such as muskrat, rabbit or poultry. Your bait can also be a "flag" of feathers and fur hung from a rock or tree near the trap. The flag should be hung with fine string or wire about 4 feet off the ground. Build up a 1-foot high-by-2-foot wide mound of dirt underneath the flag. The bobcat will step on the mound of dirt to reach the flag, and, when he does, the steel leg hold trap you hid in the mound will trap him.

Wire Cage Trap

Extra-large cage traps, which are constructed of metal or wire mesh, are very effective at trapping bobcats when the cages are set properly. Cover the sides and top of the cage with grass or brush to make it look like an ordinary recess or cubby in a brush or rock outcrop. Set the trap in an area around bobcat dens, trails and hunting sites. Cover the bottom of the cage with dirt. Use a live rabbit, muskrat or chicken for bait. The bobcat walks into the cage, the door springs shut and it cannot get back out.

Snare

A snare is an effective device to trap a bobcat, but it requires caution and expertise, especially when releasing the bobcat from the snare. The snare should be set in a bobcat runway, cubby set, or den entrance. Do not use bait, and only use camouflage to hide the snare's outline. Grass usually works well. The spring-loaded snares are the best choice for bobcats. A live snare trap will hold the bobcat alive. The lock will tighten on the bobcat, but relaxes when the bobcat stops fighting it, allowing it to breath normally again. A kill snare trap actually kills the bobcat. These are usually just used when repeated attempts to relocate a bobcat have failed.

It will take two people to remove the live snare from the bobcat, one at the back feet and the other at the neck. If an immobilizing drug is available, it should be used. Live snares should be checked often because predators, such as coyotes, eagles and mountain lions will zero in on the snared bobcat.
