Make party and holiday decorations by coating Styrofoam cones with glitter.
Make your own centerpieces or holiday decorations by putting glitter on inexpensive Styrofoam cones. As a finished product or as a base for further adornments, the glittery cones look good alone or in clusters of varying heights. The project is simple enough to share with small children---and the result is festive enough to use as decoration for all but the most formal of occasions.
Instructions
1. Mix a 2:1 combination of white craft glue and water in a paper cup. Stir thoroughly, until the glue and water mixture look smooth and creamy.
2. Spread a sheet of clean, dry newspaper over your work surface. Place the Styrofoam cone in the center of the newspaper.
3. Paint the glue mixture onto the Styrofoam cone using a half-inch to one-inch paintbrush, depending on the size of your cone. Brush the glue everywhere but the pointy top of the cone. Work quickly so the glue does not start to dry.
4. Shake the glitter onto your cone, making sure the excess falls on the newspaper. Hold the cone by the glue-free tip, and turn and rotate it as needed to get a thick, even coating of glitter. Set the cone upright on its flat base, and let it dry for 45 minutes.
5. Pick up the Styrofoam cone by the tip and the base. Shake it gently to remove any loose glitter. Set the cone aside. Pick up the sides of your newspaper, two at a time, and shake the excess glitter into one clump in the center of the paper.
6. Brush the glue mixture onto the bare tip of the Styrofoam cone. Dip the cone tip into the glitter clump in the center of your newspaper. Let it dry for another 45 minutes, and then shake the excess glitter from the tip.
7. Roll the newspaper into a funnel shape. Pour the unused glitter back into the glitter container.
