Steps To Make A Superman Clay Sculpture

Make your own figure sculpture.

You can make your own Superman clay sculpture right at home. You don't even need a kiln to harden it. Today there are air-dry clays that have almost the same look and feel as kiln-fired clays. The first thing to determine is how large you want your clay figurine to be. Once you know that, you will know how much of each material you need to purchase. There are many tools you can buy to help you sculpt a figure, but the two basic essentials are air-dry clay and armature wire.

Instructions

1. Twist and bend the armature wire into the rough shape of Superman. This should include head, arms, legs, body and cape. Also include feet and hands.

2. Use the thin wire to cut a slab of clay off the block of air-dry clay. Slam the clay down on a table or floor to get the bubbles out.

3. Set the armature on top of the wood block and wrap the clay around the armature. Use your fingers to sculpt the clay into the desired shape. Also press some clay from the feet onto the wood block so that the figure can stand up.

4. Cover the sculpture with a damp towel when you are finished and wrap the entire sculpture loosely in a plastic trash bag and secure the end so that outside air can't flow into the bag. Allow the clay to set for 24 hours.

5. Unwrap the sculpture and spray the clay with water to soften the outer layer. Make any final sculpting touches with your hands. When you are satisfied with how your Superman sculpture looks, allow the clay to dry in the open air for 48 hours.

6. Paint the sculpture when it has completely dried. Finish it by brushing on a clear polyurethane varnish if desired. Use a sponge brush for this final top coat for best results.
