Homemade Costumes For Babies

Homemade baby costumes are family treasures.

You'll keep the pictures from your baby's first Halloween for years. You can make a costume that matches the rest of the family, since you'll be holding the baby throughout the night. Making a homemade costume for your baby helps commemorate the event.

Animal Costumes

Dress your baby as a baby animal for Halloween for a cute, recognizable costume. A cape that looks like wings allows your baby to wear everyday clothes for comfort. Make the wings from felt. Iron on fusible interfacing to the back of felt. Cut the felt into wing shapes. An iron helps crease the fabric to create a feather effect. Sew several smaller wings on top of each other for a tiered effect. Make a tail by gluing another creased piece of felt to a pair of tights. Sew a ribbon to the top of each wing so you can tie it to your child's outfit. Sew two sets of wings together. Add a hood to the top of the costume to complete the look.

Two white body suits can be the base for a fluffy chicken costume. Place one suit inside the other and tuck quilt batting in between the two suits. Keep the suits in place by sewing together at the neck and leg holes. Craft expert Martha Stewart suggests pinning feather boas to the body suit while your child is wearing it. Use safety pins, then take off the suit and sew the feathers to the costume by hand every 4 inches. Make the hat from a white baby bonnet and felt pieces. Make the rooster comb by cutting out two red felt pieces and sewing the top and sides together. Batting ensures that the comb stands straight up. Hot glue secures the comb to the hat.

Flower Costume

Turn your baby into a tropical flower. Dress her in a yellow bodysuit so she looks like flower pollen. Armature wire is the each petal's base and allows you to shape the costume for a lifelike look. Your child can be a stargazer lily if you use pink felt or a tigerlily if you use orange felt.

Make six large petal shapes with the wire and keep it in place with masking tape. Cut out fleece shapes that is 1/2 inch larger than the frame. Fabric glue secures the fabric and wire. You can hold the pieces together while the glue dries with clothes pins. Add texture to the tropical flower by gluing small dots to the petal. For the tigerlily the dots should be brown and use a darker shade of pink for the stargazer lily. The petals will bend so you can shape them into an exotic tropical flower. The foundation of the costume is a large piece of green felt in an elongated triangle shape that will wrap around your child's legs. Cut a slit on the two bottom corners of the triangle to act as button holes. A button on the top triangle point holds the costume together. You can either hand sew the petals to the felt or use safety pins. You can put petals on the front of the costume using diaper pins.

Safety Concerns

When making homemade costumes for Halloween, take into account your child's comfort and safety. Use nontoxic glue and paint to create the costume. Costumes that use larger pieces may be more suitable because it won't pose a choking hazard if pulled apart. Halloween costumes for a baby should be easy to move in and made from comfortable fabrics.
