Crafts With Rockhopper Penguins

The rockhopper penguin, the smallest variety of the crested penguins, lives in arctic conditions just like other penguins. Rockhopper penguins are so named because of the yellow-and-black tuft of feathers protruding from each bird's head. Children can make several crafts that will help them learn about the rockhopper penguin.

Fingerprint Penguin

For this project, you will need white, black, orange and yellow paint. You will also need paper. Place one thumbprint of white paint onto the paper. Place a pinky print of black paint on either side of the white paint for wings. Make a black circle for a head. Add two orange feet and an orange beak. Place a small print on top of the head for the rockhopper's crest. Use small white dots for eyes.

Toilet Paper Roll Penguin

Wrap the toilet paper roll in black paper. Cut out a white oval, and place it on the roll for a stomach. Glue two orange feet to the bottom of the roll and two black wings to either side. Draw a face and beak onto the penguin with markers. Glue a small yellow feather to the top of the toilet paper roll for a crest.

Soda Bottle Penguin

Remove the label from a soda bottle. Paint the bottle black with a white stomach. Cut out feet, a beak, wings and a yellow crest from craft foam. Glue the foam pieces to the soda bottle in the appropriate places on the bottle. Glue the crest to the top of the soda lid. Glue two large googly eyes to the front of the bottle to complete the penguin.

Papier-Mâché Penguin

Blow up a small balloon. Tie a string around the top of the balloon to separate the penguin's head from its body. Make two small legs from masking tape, and tape them to the bottom of the balloon. Make two feet from cardboard, and tape them to the legs. Cover the balloon in three layers of papier-mâché, and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Add a foam tail, wings, beak and crest to the balloon. Paint the penguin the appropriate colors, and allow it to dry.
