Steps To Make Crafts With Shadow Boxes

Rather than use a scrapbook, photo album or picture frame to display memories, create a keepsake out of a shadow box. People use shadow boxes -- items that look like deep picture frames -- to display items like pictures and mementos. Shadow boxes also make great conversation pieces and allow you to talk about your memories without dragging out a photo album or scrapbook.

Instructions

Scene

1. Spread rubber cement on the back piece of the inside of shadow box. The paper only goes on the back piece of the shadow box to act as a background. Press your background piece to the glue. The paper should completely cover the back opening of the box. Trim off any extra paper hanging off the back of the box. If you use fabric, cut a piece of fabric to cover the back of the box. Apply hot glue to the back of the shadow box and press the fabric into place. Keep the fabric tight. Cut off any overhanging fabric.

2. Spread rubber cement to the various items going on the paper. Press the items to the paper. Let the glue dry before setting the shadow box upright.

3. Place the larger items on the bottom of the shadow box. Arrange the pieces to reflect the theme of the box. For example, to represent a beach theme, arrange seashells from largest to smallest.

4. Hang the box or set it in a secure place.

Memory Box

5. Hang the shadow box on the wall with a hammer and nails.

6. Place a large item in the back of the box. Make sure the top of the item leaves no more than a two-inch gap from the top of the box. The item acts as the main point of interest, so it should be visible.

7. Arrange the smaller items around the main item. Do not completely block the item in the back. For example, if you make a fishing memory box, place a model of a fishing pole in the back as the main item. Hang a fake fish off the end of the rod, and do not put anything in front of the reel. Use small items like fishing lures to decorate the box.
