How You Can Trim A Sheltie'S Fur

Shelties require frequent maintenance.

Shelties, or Shetland Sheepdogs, are herding dogs with long, flat coats. Keeping your Sheltie's fur trimmed and orderly is an important part of maintaining his or her health and appearance. While styles, lengths, and other stylistic elements come down to individual opinion, the basic mechanics for trimming Sheltie fur are relatively easy to master.

Instructions

1. Give your Sheltie a bath. Starting with clean fur will dramatically decrease the difficulty of trimming.

2. Brush your Sheltie thoroughly with the slicker brush. Be sure to get out any nasty tangles around the hocks (back legs).

3. Trim the fur around the ears by combing it directly upwards, then using the scissors to trim it down to size.

4. Comb the fur on your Sheltie's legs downward. Look for areas in which the fur is too long or sticks out from the paws, and trim those areas with your scissors.

5. Work your way around your Sheltie's body, carefully combing and trimming fur as you go.
