Kinds Of Hawaii Game Wild birds

Pheasants and quail are popular game birds hunted in Hawaii.

Hawaii is renowned for its beautiful beaches and tourist activities. However, the state of Hawaii is also a popular hunting destination for both big and small game. Hawaii is home to many different game birds, such as wild turkeys, pheasants, grouse and doves, as well as partridges and quail. Some Hawaii game birds have inhabited the islands for over 150 years, while others have been there less than 50 years.

Turkey

With their large fan-shaped tail feathers, turkeys are some of the largest and most powerful game birds in the State of Hawaii. The wild turkey was introduced to the island as a game bird in 1788. Today, it is a well established game bird, with the largest population being the Rio Grande turkey. Wild turkeys are present on all the islands of Hawaii except for Kauai and Oahu.

Pheasant

Pheasants are found in meadows, fields and wooded areas throughout the state. Game pheasants such as the blue and ringed neck pheasant are popularly hunted for the use of their plumage in feather lei making. You can find the popular ringed-neck pheasant on the islands of Maui, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Lanai. These game birds make for a difficult hunt, as their coloring allows them to blend in well with the landscape.

Grouse and Doves

Grouse and doves are game birds in Hawaii that are closely related to pigeons. These are among the smallest game birds hunted in Hawaii. The grouse is found congregating in farmer's fields and areas where water is present. They are mainly located on the main island. However, when hunting the grouse, it is important to exercise caution, as the grouse is easily confused with the Golden plover, which is not a game bird. Doves make for popular hunting in Hawaii, as they are well populated and widespread on most islands. Popular doves include the spotted and barred doves.

Quail and Partridge

The bobwhite quail is common on farmland, making this a popular game bird in the state of Hawaii. The California quail is another popular variety, but these game birds are not found on the islands of Kauai or Oahu. The quail is another difficult hunt because its mixture of brown, grey, red and black coloring allows it to blend in with the landscape. The partridge is also a difficult game bird to hunt due to its ability to hide and move quickly. Partridges are found on most islands in Hawaii.
