Free Crafts For Children In Junior High School

Use old CDs to make curtains or a CD case holder.

Middle school students can keep busy with crafts that use common household or basic supplies. Crafts often become expensive with many accessories to buy, but these crafts don't require any additional purchases. They can also be used for personalized gifts and can be tailored to fit the crafter's preferences.

Recycled Potpourri

Use food scraps to create scented potpourri you can use yourself or give as a gift. Save orange, lemon and apple peels for a few days. You also can ask your neighbors and friends to save the fruit peels for a few days. After you have collected at least one cup of each peel, lay the pieces out flat to dry in a well-lit area. When the pieces are dry, mix them with your favorite spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom all work well. Put the spices and fruit peels in a netting material, such as cheesecloth or pantyhose. Then tie the potpourri bag closed with either a rubber band, string or piece of ribbon.

Puzzle Piece Curtains

Recycle an old puzzle and make a funky curtain to hang in a doorway or window. Measure the window or door you'd like to cover. Then, cut pieces of thread or string a few feet longer. Tie on pieces of the puzzle to the string. The closer the puzzle pieces are tied together, the thicker the curtain will be. Create enough strands of puzzle pieces to cover the desired area. Trim any extra string from the bottom of the curtains. Hang the curtains with push pins. You also can try this craft with old, scratched or damaged CDs. Consider painting the CDs to make them match the room decor.

CD Holder

Use an old box to make a CD holder. First, find an old box that is about 6 inches by 6 inches. Cut off the top, and then put it on its side so that it looks like a shelf. Use fabric scraps or construction paper to cover the box in whatever material or color you prefer. Use glue---preferably from a hot glue gun---to paste the material in place. Add embellishments, such as stickers, to personalize the box. You can even wrap and glue a small piece of an old feather boa to the open end. Glue old CDs to the outside of the box as a final decorative touch.
