Having your child and her guests dress up in Victorian costume is a fun way to emphasize the Victorian theme of the party.
Most little girls love playing dress up, so why not choose a Victorian theme for your daughter's next birthday party. You can incorporate the Victorian theme into everything from the invitations to the the activities. The planning will generally depend on how many children you would like to invite, how old they are, and how long the party will be.
Costumes
To successfully carry out a Victorian-themed party, it's important to have all the kids at the party dress accordingly. One option is to note on the party invitations that there is a Victorian costume theme, and that guests should arrive dressed accordingly. Another option is to provide dress-up clothes for the guests when they arrive. Guests can choose their favorite items from a selection of wardrobe items, and assemble their own Victorian costume at the party. You should be able to find fairly inexpensive items at a vintage or used clothing store, or you can rent them from a costume shop. Various accessories, such as toy gloves, purses, necklaces and feather boas can be purchased from a dollar store or craft supplies store. Have a "photo booth" available so your child and her guests can have their pictures taken as a keepsake. Take their pictures with a polaroid camera and slip them into their gift bags before they leave.
Activities
Traditional birthday party games can take on a Victorian theme with just a few minor tweaks. The classic game of "pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey" can be made more Victorian by using a hand-drawn donkey on old-fashioned paper. The tails can be made with actual felt rather than paper, and the blindfold can be a handkerchief or silk scarf. Also popular from the Victorian era are egg and candy hunts. Hide small pieces of candy or plastic eggs filled with toys or candy in secret spots and have the children go hunting for them. If they are old enough, a short game of lawn croquet or boccie ball would continue the spirit of the party.
Gift Bags
For Victorian-style gift bags, purchase small wicker baskets from a crafts or garden supply store. Decorate them with ribbons and silk flowers, and fill them with old-fashioned ribbon candies, plastic charm bracelets and various small trinkets. Other possibilities include fabric-covered notebooks, lace bracelets or necklaces, and toy makeup. If you have the time, line the baskets with fabric or lace to add an extra touch of Victorian luxury to the gift bags.
Tea Party Menu
Having a traditional Victorian tea party rather than a formal supper is a fun twist on conventional birthday party ideas. Make a frosted layer cake as the birthday cake and serve it at the tea party. Offer the girls a variety of decaffeinated teas, as well as small trays of finger sandwiches, cookies and cakes. Offering the classic scones with clotted cream and jam in miniature format adds an extra touch of whimsy that will not be readily forgotten.
