Birdhouses usually hang in trees to offer birds a place to make their nest and have their young. Birdhouses may be painted and decorated in many ways. Plain wooden birdhouses can be turned into decorative centerpieces for a number of different occasions, from a wedding to Halloween, with a little creativity. When the event is over, hang the birdhouse from your centerpiece outside for the birds to use.
Halloween
Paint a plain wooden birdhouse black with purple, green and orange trim. Paint windows and a door onto your house, with scary monsters peeking out the windows. Paint a light gray picket fence around the bottom, with pumpkins on it. Use black plastic spiders, fake spider webs and ghosts made from cotton balls and white tissue paper to decorate the birdhouse.
Housewarming
Cut a piece of sod to fit inside a baking pan or onto a cookie sheet. Paint a plain wooden birdhouse to look like your new home and set it on top of the sod. Paint your last name on a rock and set it outside the birdhouse. Add miniature flower pots filled with moss and small silk flowers to the birdhouse's front lawn.
Wedding
Decorate a wooden birdhouse painted white with white silk flowers, glitter, beads and ribbon. Make a small card with the couple's initials on it and hang it from the peak of the birdhouse. Set the birdhouse on a bed of moss or on top of a coiled white feather boa. You can alter the colors of this idea to fit the colors of your wedding.
Graduation
Paint your birdhouse to resemble a schoolhouse by painting it white with a black roof. Attach painted wooden shapes, such as an apple, pencil, book and letters, to the birdhouse to add to the education theme. You can also add a small bell above the door, a chalkboard or miniature letter blocks to the birdhouse. Roll a small piece of white or cream paper into a small scroll and tie it up with a ribbon. Stuff the small diploma into the birdhouse hole.
Baby Shower
Paint a plain wooden birdhouse pastel blue for a boy, pastel pink for a girl or pastel yellow if the parents do not know the sex of the baby. Decorate the house with miniature wooden blocks, baby bottles, ribbon, silk flowers and other embellishments that are baby themed. Place a small fake mommy bird and baby bird in a nest in the door of the birdhouse.
