Steps To Make A Cover For Any Girl'S Mattress From Tulle

Tulle is a transparent material that does not fray.

Brighten up a little girl's room with a colorful tulle bed canopy. Tulle is a lightweight netting made from fibers such as silk, rayon and nylon. Select from the many colors of tulle available or choose just one. Accent your canopy top with contrasting flowers or feathers and turn your little girl's bedroom into a fairy wonderland, a princess room or anything her imagination can think of!

Instructions

1. Install a ceiling hook positioned above the head of the bed where you want the canopy to hang. Measure how far you want the tulle to hang down from the hoop to encircle the bed. Use this measurement to determine the length of each strip. Cut the tulle into strips.

2. Measure the circumference of the hula hoop in inches. The average-size hula hoop is 84 inches. Cut strips of complementary colored cotton velour fabric 3-inches wide by 168-inches in length, or double the circumference of your hoop. Serge or zigzag stitch strips of fabric together to achieve the correct length.

3. Gather the top of each tulle strip by setting the tension on the sewing machine to 6 and the stitch length to 8. The machine will gather the fabric as you sew. Optionally, sew the seams of the tulle strips together to create one wide panel before gathering. Leave an opening to enter and exit the canopy. After gathering the fabric, reset the sewing machine to a standard tension of 4 or 5 and stitch length of 3 to 4.

4. Lay the casing flat, wrong side up. Lay the gathered tulle strips on top of the casing and pin in place. Sew the tulle to the casing. Fold the casing over, wrong sides together, and sew the casing closed. You now have a long strip of casing with the tulle attached. Cut the hula hoop in one place and slide the casing over the hoop. Close the hoop with duct tape, wrapping the tape 6 inches out on either side of the cut.

5. Tie two strips of tulle or ribbon to the hoop, forming a cross in the center, to hang the canopy. Embellish the hoop by gluing a feather boa or fabric flowers to the outside of the hoop. Optionally, make flowers with leaves from felt and sew them to the canopy hanger, allowing them to drape down over the outside of the hoop.
